Alternative Electric Energy – Save Money And The Environment
Posted on June 17th, 2009 in Family | No Comments »
With the burden on the earth’s natural resources becoming more onerous, alternative electric energy is becoming less of an option and more of a necessity. The toll on the environment also requires us to explore realistic solutions to preserve dwindling resources.
Since the industrial revolution, we have placed heavy demand on non renewable resources such as coal, oil, and gas. In some countries deforestation is compounded by people who still use wood for charcoal. This trend cannot continue and massive investment into alternative electric energy is imperative.
Many people think of alternative electric energy as advanced scientific concepts that are too complicated for the ordinary lay man. While many alternative energy systems are indeed high technology, the principle behind most of them is actually quite straight forward. The basic idea is to harness energy sources that are infinitely available or renewable to produce electricity instead of depleting finite sources any further.
There are a few alternative electric energy systems that are quite well known and are already in quite widespread use. These include wind power, hydro power and solar power. Some of these energy systems have actually been around for hundreds of years but just updated to meet current demands.
Wind power is one alternative electric energy technology. On many European landscapes you can still find relics of old windmills that were used by farmers to grind grain. The wind was caught in the great blades of these mills which would cause them to turn. The rotating action turned a shaft and the shaft would turn the millstones. Modern windmills are not connected to millstones but rather turbines. When the turbines spin they create electricity. Wind turbines are a renewable source of electric energy because wind is free and abundant.
The cleanest and cheapest alternative electricity energy system for providing electricity to a national grid is hydro power. Hydro electric power is again a modern adaptation of old water wheels that were used for milling in the past. The historical varieties were commonly placed in a river where rushing water could rotate the wheel. Today, modern hydro power plants are placed on the edge of a dam. As water falls from the higher level to the lower level, it forces its way past turbine blades causing them to spin. Turbines feed generators that produce electricity. Many countries use hydro electric power because of its cost effectiveness. These systems are also encouraged because of their non polluting characteristics.
Solar power is an increasingly popular alternative electric energy system that uses the rays of the sun to produce electricity. Solar panels are a very modern creation and perhaps a little more complex in how they work. The sun’s energy is caught up in special photo voltaic cells which converts it into usable energy that can be stored in batteries. Solar power is the alternative electric energy system that is most adaptable for domestic use.

Are Home Burglar Alarms Effective?
Posted on June 17th, 2009 in Family | No Comments »
With the economy being the way it is, many home owners are turning to home burglar alarms and home security signs to protect their belongings. What are the alarms types? Should a home burglar alarm be the only means of protection? If not what other things can be done to protect property? These and other questions will be answered below.
There are two types of home burglar alarms closed circuit and open circuit. Closed circuit allows for the electricity t flow until a door or window is open. The circuit is broken and an alarm goes off. Open circuit it is the opposite. There isn’t a flow until the door or window is open and then an alarm goes off.
There are several brands of Home burglar alarms to choose from. When shopping it is a good idea to compare prices and features. All good alarms should have a display area to let you know if it is working properly or if problems have occurred within the system. The alarm you choose should be able to detect smoke, and it should have battery back up.
Home burglar alarms come equipped with lights, sirens or automatic dialing system. The automatic dialer will either call the monitoring company or the police with a recorded address. An alarm that is equipped with sound often scares away potential intruders. This type is highly recommended. There are stores that carry alarms equipped with noise and automatic dialer.
Many home owners add motion detectors with their home burglar alarm. Motion detectors work by utilizing sound waves, radio energy or infrared energy to supervise movement. A beam passes between two areas and when the reflection is lost an alarm is set off..
Security signs are another way to protect your home. Potential burglar often sees these warning, finds easier places to rob. Security signs are only effective if you place them in obvious areas. The recommended places are on house doors, the curb by the driveway, in flower bed and by garage door.
Security signs are another type of home protection. Burglars will often choose homes that are easier to rob. By placing signs on your exterior doors, garage doors, flower beds and driveway curb, burglars are often scares away.
To increase security you can add motion detectors. Together, motion detectors and home burglar alarms will give you and your family the peace of mind you deserve.

Door Lock Selection
Posted on June 17th, 2009 in Family | No Comments »
When youre shopping for a door lock, its important to know what your needs and options are. In this article Ill go over all of the basic types, so you know what best fits your needs.
One of the most common locks for interior doors is the Privacy Lockset. The emphasis here is on privacy, rather than on security. These locks are primarily intended for situations where the main objective is to stop family members or friends from entering. These locks are primarily used on interior doors like bed or bathrooms. People generally love these locks for their ease of use.
The locks used on exterior facing doors are very different. Obviously, you wouldn’t want to use an interior lockset for this, because of safety concerns. Instead, most people use what is called an Entry Lockset. On one side of the door handle, there is a button switch. On the other side, there is a keyhole for a substantial key.
A deadbolt lock is a very familiar lock for homeowners. This type of lock sinks a plug, called a throw, into the frame of the door. This type of lock is one of the safest for home use, and provides a reliable means of security.
A surface-mounted deadbolt is just like a regular deadbolt, but instead of being mounted into the door, it is installed on the inside face of the door. The throw sinks into a metal flashing that is mounted on the inside of the door frame. These locks can be slightly cumbersome and are not as widely used as regular deadbolts, but the safety values is essentially equal for either variety.
A handleset is really a combination of different locks. Handlesets are very common setups for exterior door, and generally consist of a deadbolt lock and a regular lockset. Available in both single and double barrel varieties.
Yet another option for an additional layer of safety and security exists for homeowners to take advantage of. This option is the night latch, which is essentially a secondary locking mechanism that automatically latches when the door closes. These locks can provide an excellent solution for homeowners looking to supplement their security.
Although it can be confusing and difficult to understand the many varieties of door locks, it is crucial that homeowners realize and come to know the options that are available to them. The saying “knowledge is power” definitely applies here, and the safety of your family really does depend on your willingness as a homeowner to find the lock that best fits your needs.

How to Make a Homemade Solar Panel With Ease
Posted on June 16th, 2009 in Family | No Comments »
One of the better ways to save money when it comes to electricity is building solar panels on your own. This form of alternative energy must be able to save up to 80% on your electrical bill every month.
Nowadays, when fossil fuels run out at a distressing rate and when natural disasters often strike and disrupt the electricity supplies, it is of utmost importance to replace the current energy generation system with an alternative one.
It is pretty easy to build some solar panels on your own for your personal use. Being able to use basic instruments that everybody has around his courtyard and to handle a couple of wires are the first steps to a well done job. You should also consider some components needed to begin building a solar panel.
Solar modules are some key components that basically alter the sun’s energy into electrical energy. The cheapest method of procuring them might be to buy them online, so attempt to find a fitting one on EBay. And f you plan building other panels afterwards, think about buying them in a larger quantity.
The system’s base is represented by the sheet Plywood. It is well recommended to use a plywood that is pretty strong. Do not use chipboard, as it is too breakable. Purchasing good quality materials can be considered an investment, but your work will last much longer and will be way better done. You’ll also need copper wires which will transport the electricity into your home. You will need plenty of this so buy it in bulk. The drills, the screwdrivers or woodwork glue are accessories that we find in every home, so you may not need to purchase them too.
For the times when the weather gets bad you must think about using some PVC sheeting in order to provide protection for the solar panels, taking into account the fact that the solar cells are very delicate.
The most difficult part of the process is the assembling itself. A particular set of instructions is needed to be acquired in order to have the work properly done. You can’t have an idea about the dimensions, so you need to purchase a set of diagrams that have explicit explanations about every step of the process. They are extremely useful as they provide all the instructions you need and so you are less likely to put all your work at a risk because of bad use of the materials.

Large And Small Planting Of Water Lily
Posted on June 14th, 2009 in Family | No Comments »
Most of the really pressing chores should be done by now in the northern garden, so you can take time out to enjoy your garden. I realize that this is a difficult thing to do, for every year I say to myself, “Slow down, take it easy; dont be a slave to the garden and landscape.” But every year its the same old story: In common with about fifty million other gardeners, I always bite off more than I can chew. I have only a little time to really look at and enjoy the late spring beauty of Oriental poppies, delphinium, lilium and the rest of the June flowering perennials.
Planting water-lilies: It is not too late to plant hardy water lilies, and in most places it is not too early to set out the tropical kinds. Usually by June 15, in the vicinity of New York City, the weather is settled and warm.
The treatment of water-lilies depends on the size of the pool: if it is a small one, say about 7 x 10 feet, and you want to grow several kinds of water-lilies in it, avoid using rich soil and large containers. If you provide these favorable conditions, the water lilies will grow so big that you wont be able to see the water for the water-lilies.
In a small pool landscape, if the water-lilies are grown in ordinary garden soil and placed in containers 6 x 14 inches, there will be room for two tropical varieties or three or four hardy kinds. In landscaping ideas, waterlilies have the admirable faculty of cutting their coat according to the cloth; they will look healthy but be smaller if they are kept on the verge of starvation.
Other planting to do in June: Gladiolus, dahlias and bedding plants such as begonia, pelargonium (geranium) and lantana can be planted now. In the vegetable garden celery can be planted and, if the garden is a small one, follow-up crops can be planted in the spaces vacated by early maturing crops such as spinach, lettuce and radish. Incidentally, one of the best of all crops to replace spinach is bush limas or bush snap beans.
Removing seed pods: One of the pleasant chores, which can be done at odd times or when you want a change from hard work, is the removing of immature seed pods from mountain-laurel, rhododendron and lilac. This task has a double purpose: that of neatening the plants and also conserving their energy for future growth.
Thinning fruit trees: After the June drop of fruits of apple, plum and peach – the trees may still bear more fruit than they can carry to maturity; the excess should be removed. Leave apples and peaches spaced 6 to 8 inches apart, plums spaced 3 to 4 inches apart.
Other chores to be done in the landscape: Spray the roses. Sow seeds of biennials. Shear the deciduous hedges.

Tips for Chicken Coop Designs
Posted on June 13th, 2009 in Family | No Comments »
If you’ve taken an interest in chicken-raising, either as a hobby or a way to acquire eggs and chicken meat without having to buy them from the grocery store, how to house your new birds will be one of the first things you want to tackle. The standard for housing poultry is to build them a comfortable chicken coop to live in. Of course, how you construct it will vary depending on your specific scenario, how many chickens you plan on keeping, what kind of area you live in, and so forth.
Regardless, though, there are some aspects of chicken coop designs that are identical no matter the circumstances.
* Make sure your birds have enough living space. Inside the coop, you’ll want to give them at least 4 square feet each in total area. This means if you have 5 chickens, you need to have at least 20 square feet for them to live comfortably in the coop.
* Make sure you leave room in the plan to attach a chicken run outside the coop itself. Chickens need 10 square feet each to walk around in, otherwise they will feel cramped.
Other than these space concerns, much of what you look for in your chicken coop designs is up to you. You can design the exterior of the coop to look like anything you want, from a victorian house or a greek temple to a functional and minimalist wooden box. One thing you should make sure to keep in mind, though, is that your coop will need to be big enough for you to get inside for cleaning purposes. If you can’t get into it, your job of keeping your chickens healthy and happy will be that much more difficult.
A few other things you want to include, regardless of your chicken coop designs are adequate ventilation and predator protection. There are many animals which prey on poultry, from foxes and hawks to wolves, wild dogs, and even wild cats. With all this to worry about, your birds will feel much safer”and thus, will be much more productive and healthy”if you ensure that their home is solid and hard for wild animals to get into. Use solid wooden walls instead of a wire frame mesh. Of course, you shouldn’t use wood to frame your chicken run; for that job, wire frame mesh is just fine.
Ventilation is important because chickens do not like extremes in temperature regardless of whether it’s too hot or too cold. They prefer cool weather, but if it’s too cold they will get just as unhappy as if it’s too hot. Make sure you include some windows when planning out your chicken coop designs to account for this preference of your birds. A window towards the top is a good idea, because the hot, stale air will go out of it naturally, and you won’t have to worry about installing some kind of mechanical system to circulate air.
Other ideas include adding nesting boxes for your hens to lay eggs in, roosts for them to sleep on, and easy-to-clean bedding boxes for the chicken droppings to fall into. Roosts are especially important, because chickens do not like sleeping on the ground. Regardless of how you make your chicken coop designs, just make sure your chickens have enough room and stay comfortable. They’ll thank you for it.

How To Get Rid Of Cat Urine Smell – 3 Easy Steps
Posted on June 10th, 2009 in Family | No Comments »
Anyone who has owned a cat will know how hard it is to eliminate a cat urine smell from within their home. The smell is very unpleasant and can linger on for a very long period of time. Conventional cleaning techniques and products are not effective in completely removing this unpleasant odor.
Not only is the smell unpleasant within the home, it is important that the problem area be treated correctly, as if not, kitty will be attracted to the same spot by the smell and will most likely urinate in the same place once again.
When the accident has been discovered, it is critical that action be taken quickly so as to minimize the damage and smell by following these simple tasks:
1 Soak up the cat urine with paper towels, putting lots of pressure over the area. If it is carpet, this will have an underlay, and that is where the urine will be.
Continue to use clean paper towels and exert pressure on the carpet until no more moisture is showing on the towels.
2. Mix up a popular home-made solution of 20% white vinegar and 80% water in a spray bottle. Spray the problem area, then softly work the area in a circular motion with a soft disposable brush. Sop up this moisture with paper towels as per the previous step.
3. Sprinkle a crystalline mineral powder called DeScent on the affected area and the lingering smell will quickly vanish. After the area is completely dry, vacuum and re-apply the DeScent powder.
Congratulation, your house should be rid of any of the cat urine odor and kitty will be not likely to re-offend in that same area again.

24″ Inch Bar Stool Evolution
Posted on June 8th, 2009 in Family | No Comments »
I don’t believe I had ever seen a 24 inch bar stool until about 5 or 6 years ago. The things just didn’t exist. All bar stools were a standard height, and that was for sitting at a bar. When I first started buying bar stools for different business ventures in the late 1980′s, bar stools were generally standardized. Bar stools, for the most part were found in bars and pubs. Times have changed and all different types of bar stools are manufactured and they now come in different heights.
There are 24″ bar stools and 30″ bar stools. These are the two standard heights for bar stools available on the market these days. For the most part, the 30″ bar stools are found in commercial areas such as bars, pubs, and restaurants. Both the 24 inch and 30 inch models are found in residential settings. There are hundreds of different models to choose from. Stools come in a wide range of different styles and colors.
During the 60s and 70s, the use of bars in private homes was generally limited to basement family rooms or possibly outside on the pool deck. The stools found around the pool tended to be made out chrome or resin. For obvious reasons, the stools needed to be water resistant. Bar stools found in the basement recreation rooms tended to be wooden with a swivel seat and a chair back. These stools were stained a dark natural walnut or oak color. All of these older style bar stools were primarily designed for use by fully grown adults.
Then about 15 years ago a revolution began in the kitchen. Kitchen renovations were becoming quite popular and very common. Kitchen renovation shows were popping up on TV. Lifestyle shows were being set in the kitchen. New glossy kitchen renovation chat rooms were being launched. It suddenly became self-evident: the kitchen was an integral and very important part, if not the most important room in the house. Today kitchens are still about function but they are also about lifestyle. The new kitchen reflects a redistribution of domestic labor. Husbands, wives, and children all contribute to meal preparation or clean up. Today’s kitchen is about stainless appliances, cappuccino makers, and breakfast bars and breakfast bar stools. Breakfast bar stools are generally 24 inch bar stools.
New ways to use the kitchen were created. It soon became apparent that families rarely sat down for breakfast together. At some point it became obvious that a breakfast bar was the perfect place to accommodate “shift eating”. It was the perfect place to read the paper or do homework. It was also a great spot to sit and chat with someone while they prepared dinner.
There are a number of good reasons the 24″ bar stool was created. Not the least of which was that the older taller chairs seemed too big for the kitchen. However, likely the most important reason was child safety. If children were to use these stools then the standard height stools were simply too high and posed a danger to children. The shorter 24″ bar stool was perfect as it blended into the kitchen and was safe for use by children.
